Review: Alton Towers Scarefest 2019

Alton Towers Scarefest returns for another year and we were given the opportunity to visit the theme park on opening day of this spooktacular season!

As in previous years, the park is open 10am-9pm every day throughout the event giving you plenty of time to experience everything that the park has to offer. After sunset it's a brilliant opportunity to experience the best rides at Alton Towers in the dark, including all of the big roller coasters.

The theme park has something for the whole family, with a mixture of family friendly spooky activities suitable for younger guests, to their newest and most intense scare mazes for only the bravest. When added to the impressive line up of brilliant rides and attractions, it makes Alton Towers Scarefest the perfect destination for your Halloween fix.

This year there are a total of five live action scare mazes, with The Alton Towers Dungeon supporting the line up:

  • The Attic: Terror of the Towers (New for 2019) - The creepy stories and legends of the Towers themselves return this year with the latest scare maze focusing on the park's iconic landmark. Visitors are first greeted during a pre-show element to the maze where the legend of 'The Governess' is explained. A fantastic use of special effects and a passageway behind a bookcase really help to set the scene before you begin to climb a number of flights of stairs towards the attic! Once there you are greeted by a number of 'children' delighted to meet you, all wishing to play. However be warned, all may not be as it seems and the further you venture into the attic the more you will discover before coming face to face with 'The Governess'. In line with the legend that is explained before, you may find yourself climbing into a fireplace to discover the secrets beyond.

  • Darkest Depths (New for 2019) - With no House of Monsters in the 2019 line-up, this is an opportunity for younger guests to experience a scare attraction (recommended for those aged 10+). Darkest Depths is situated within Mutiny Bay and was simply fantastic! Unlike the House of Monsters this new attraction is a more traditional maze, however we were blown away by the theming throughout, including water pouring through the walls within the sinking ship. If anything the attraction could give older guests a fright as you come face to face with the huge tentacles of the Kraken!

  • Sub Species: The End Games - Returning again for the 2019 season and with further enhancements, it's the park's most intense experience! Situated within Alton Towers’ deepest darkest basement, this maze is a huge post-apocalyptic game for your creepy hosts whom through a clever pre-maze show bet on your survival chances for the race ahead. Once in the maze itself you may find yourself split up and all alone as you try to avoid the ‘dead ends’ and wrong turns through a seemingly unending number of well themed rooms. Not to mention coming face to face with some of your hosts throughout the journey. Each guest can experience a different route but is sure to meet the same fate in the end…

  • Altonville Mine Tours: Uncover the Legend of the Skin Snatchers – Also inside the Towers, this scare maze takes on the theme of a reopened mine. With selected guests placed in hard hats with authentic lamps, you are really not sure what to expect as you begin to descend into the darkness – let’s just hope those helmet lights last as long as you! With unexpected events at every turn and truly terrifying and immersive scenes this scare maze is not to be missed. Clever use of lighting, smells, props, and of course scares, help make this a very welcome return for this attraction.

  • Project 42 – Returns for the 2019 event and is one of the few mazes not located in the Towers themselves. Located in the Forbidden Valley in the building which was once home to 'Nemesis: Sub Terra', you are first shown a pre-maze video which explains the back story to the attraction. This element and the story remains unchanged from 2018, however much work has obviously gone into the scares within the maze itself. The use of strobe lighting effects help make this experience really intense with plenty of scares along the way, so Project 42 remains a good part of the line-up.

There's even more for families to enjoy this Scarefest including:

  • Freaky Fun Zone – This area has returned but the stage has now changed location to the bottom of Towers Street closer to the entrance of the park. Shows include Skelvin's Spooky Storytime, Phil & Franklyn's Ghoulish Games, Gretyl's Spell School and Patch's Halloween Party.

  • CBeebies fans can dress up and join all their favourite characters for their first Halloween Party at the CBeebies Land Monsters’ Ball in Big Fun Showtime.

Thanks to the VIP experience provided by Alton Towers not only were we able to experience all of the above, but we also enjoyed a number of rides on TH13TEEN, Rita, Hex, The Smiler, Oblivion, Galactica, Nemesis, Duel and of course Wicker Man.

On top of all of this, we had time to walk around some of the gardens and other areas of the park taking in all of the atmosphere. Alton Towers looked fantastic again this year and it was pleasing to see decorations in the way of bunting and spooky music being played throughout the park.

Alton Towers Scarefest continues on 18th October - 3rd November 2019.
