The Haunted Castle 2018 - review & photos

Warwick Castle once again becomes The Haunted Castle for Halloween in 2018, and we were invited to the first day of the event to experience the highlights of this year's unearthly line-up.

Warwick Castle has packaged their Halloween attractions into 3 categories; Scaredy Squires (suitable for all ages), Daring Dukes (10 years +) and Brave Knights (12 years +).

Scaredy Squires

  • Haunted Hollows - a spooky walkthough that's an absolute highlight of the event. Thanks to a dark woodland setting, tons of Halloween decorations and theming, smoke and lights, plus great costumed characters and creatures, this is thoroughly entertaining for everyone.

  • Witches Tower - a Halloween themed overlay of the Princess Tower attraction. This is an interactive storytelling experience for families where the Witches of Warwick require your help to cast their mischievous spell.

Daring Dukes

  • House of Wax (New for 2018) - an overlay of the Royal Weekend Party attraction. The main rooms are used to tell the story of a waxwork modeller, turned murderer, that will try to turn you into his latest exhibit. Due to major pacing issues it was a very disjointed experience, unclear whether the group should stop and wait for something to happen in each space or just walk past. There were a small number of actors to bring it to life and some strobe lighting, but no scares as such.

  • Escape Room - participants have to work together in a 30 minute challenge to complete puzzles and find the key to freedom. £7 extra per person. Sadly we were unable to review this attraction due to the limited availability.

Brave Knights

  • Outbreak 1369 - an overlay of the Kingmaker attraction. All of the elaborate sets and waxworks have been re-purposed to create a walkthrough attraction that transports you back to 1369 as a plague has engulfed Warwick Castle. It includes a few actors lurking in corners and a couple that interact with visitors along the route, but it's definitely not a typical scare maze.

  • Séance - a great 20 minute fully immersive audio experience that takes place in complete darkness, developed by theatrical company Darkfield. £4.50 extra per person. We went into this a little unsure of what to expect, but upon taking our seats at a long table within one of the historic rooms and placing the headphones on our head, we could immediately tell that this would be high quality. The lights go off and the impressive multi-layered and binaural audio immerses you in a simulated séance that almost convinces you that strange things are really happening all around you. We strongly recommend doing this.

Various live Halloween shows took place during the day on the Dead Centre Stage, including the Wizard School and the Trial of Joan of Arc

We also experienced the Castle Dungeon (£9 extra per person) which is by far the strongest attraction at the castle, and although unchanged for The Haunted Castle, the finale is based on the Witches of Warwick so it fits right in. Lasting around 45 minutes, participants come face to face with live actors who provide laughs, scares and shocks through a series of mini interactive shows. There are elements of theatre, lots of jokes and plenty of special effects, plus historical storytelling by the iconic characters themselves.

The Haunted Castle continues daily until 4th November 2018 at Warwick Castle.
