Universal Studios theme park coming to UK set to open in 2031

A multi-billion-pound investment in a major new Universal theme park and resort in Bedford has been agreed between Universal, the UK government and the local council.

In 2023, Universal confirmed the purchase of an approximately 476-acre (192-hectare) parcel of land south of Bedford with the goal of exploring a potential new park and resort experience at this site. They have spent the last several months undertaking feasibility and due diligence work and discussing the project with local and national stakeholders.

The theme park, which is set to be one of the largest and most advanced in Europe, will bring nearly 20,000 jobs during the construction period, with a further 8,000 new jobs across the hospitality and creative industries when it opens in 2031.

Universal expects the site to generate nearly £50 billion for the economy by 2055, with 8.5 million visitors expected in its first year – becoming the largest visitor attraction in the UK. It will be the first Universal-branded theme park in the UK and Europe, and the plans also feature a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining and entertainment complex.

The site in Bedford is in an ideal location with convenient, fast rail links to London and London Luton Airport, and so will be well-connected for travel from all parts of the UK and Europe. The site has been identified by Bedford Borough Council for development for some time and it has the size and flat topography that is important for a large-scale theme park resort.

Universal Destinations & Experiences has five branded theme parks and resorts across the globe, including Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Japan, Universal Beijing Resort and Universal Studios Singapore. Each of these world-class resorts feature thrilling, immersive attractions, exceptional hotel and resort options, unique merchandise and culinary experiences as well as live and virtual entertainment.

A full planning proposal will be submitted to the UK government with construction expected to start in 2026.
